I was walking near the train station in Seattle today and saw an older man in front of me pulling several wheeled suitcases.  He had a bird on his shoulder. At first I thought it was a battery operated toy.  I got closer and thought, wow, it's a pigeon.  We finally met up at a crosswalk and I got to meet his rescued African Grey girl.  I don't recall her name but she is 17 years old and he said she came from your rescue organization.  He was an interesting man -- not gregarious, kind of hermit-ish, but very nice.   He and his beautiful girl were obviously completely devoted to each other.  I asked if she talked much and he turned his head, nuzzled her and, speaking more to his girl than to me he said, "Oh, yes, she's quite a talker."

I first became smitten with parrots when I read the story of Tiko and his owner (The Parrot Who Owns Me by Joanna Burger). I realize I do not yet have the ideal home to offer a rescue bird. But I am two years away from retirement, still young at age 60, and dream that there will be a parrot companion in my future.

I just wanted to tell you about my encounter and how complete and contented this man was with his Grey girl.

Baby

Hi, Margaret. Hope you and all your charges are doing well.

Well, it took 6 weeks, but we found out yesterday that Baby is a closet talker! We were in the other room talking when we suddenly heard a full repertoire. In addition to loud wolf whistles, here's a partial list of what she says:

Hello
How ya doing?
What's going on?
Want to go outside buddy?
Where's Mommy?
Good bird.

These are all in a man's voice, but most excitingly, I'm pretty sure she said "Where's Grammy" in a different voice and that's me!

She's still timid, but she spends all day outside of the cage, steps up willingly, give me kisses, and has explored most of the first floor. She loves Golden Feast Bean Supreme and scrambled eggs in addition to her fresh fruit and vegetables. I'm so in love with her, it's tough to spend some equal quality time with the Bubba the cockatiel, but Bubba won't let himself be forgotten - that's for sure. Baby's afraid of Bubba and Bubba knows it, so they have to be kept as separate as possible. Anyway, Happy Easter and thanks again for my beautiful Baby.

LolaBelle "Belle"

Dear animal lover/bird owner,

If you are a parrot owner or animal lover, I don't need to tell you the joy these creatures bring to our daily lives. They make us laugh, love, and cry. Studies have shown the people who bring an animal into their heart can lower their blood pressure and reduce stress. They give us unconditional love.

I currently share my home with several animals. Many of them come into my life though other people, making me their second or third caretaker. One of these animals came to me from Jojo the Grey Parrot Adoption and Rescue, her name is LolaBelle. "Belle" as I call her, is a beautiful bird that was rescued from a hoarding situation. She was one of 14 large parrots and several cats and dogs kept in unsafe and unclean conditions.

When the call came in to Jojo the Grey about the situation these birds were in, volunteers mobilized. Organizing carriers, preparing cages and calling foster homes. A small caravan of vehicles went to the site. The volunteers entered the home and, through the stench of animal urine and feces, removed the birds. That was half the battle - the health of the birds needed to be assessed. The removal was then followed by several trips to the veterinary office for a minimum health check including bloodwork. Some birds needed followup care, including my "Belle" who had suffered two broken wings and had never received proper care, healing improperly.

Fortunately the situation I have just described is not a daily event for Jojo the Grey but it did happen and it will happen again. On average, each incoming bird to the rescue costs a lot in food, toys and medical care. Jojo the Grey is a non-profit, volunteer organization that relies on people like you to help.

How can you help?

Time - attend outreaches, clean cages, run needed errands, make parrot toys, etc.
Money - consider sponsoring a bird, your donations are tax deductible.
Items - please contact us for specifics (medications, perches, cages, carriers, etc.).

Buddy
Chestnut-fronted Macaw

Dear Margaret,

Buddy Chestnut-fronted Macaw (Severe Macaw)

Buddy is doing GREAT.  She is spoiled rotten.  She "rules the roost" here.  She is so loving and easy to spoil.  She lays in my arms like a baby.  I am truly happy and totally satisfied with Buddy.  She's on my shoulder right now.  (I think she's looking to see if my spelling is right.) 

I am very satisfied with your adoption process.  It was quick, but I knew just from the letters that this adoption service was truly in business for the bird, not to make a killing.  I have referred a few people to your service, but I also told them that this is a lifetime commitment, not a short-term thing.  I have also told them to do careful research before even thinking about a large bird.  I would never want to be responsible for a bird having a bad life.

Thank you so much for everything that you did for me. 

This adoption has gone so well.  I am considering a second bird in the future.

Vosmaeri Eclectus

Dear Margaret,

Cokie Vosmaeri Eclectus

I've renamed Beaker "Cokie", and in the 2 weeks I've had her she has been doing so very well. Last night, she actually started talking! She's been saying, "What a good girl!"

Here are some photos of her having fun on her bungee perch. She is remarkably affectionate and loves to snuggle on my shoulder. She has been eating a wide variety of healthy foods, and my cat has accepted her presence in the household and is leaving her in peace.

I took her to the avian vet yesterday for a check-up and was told that, based on the "96" stamped on her leg band, she may actually be 13 years old instead of the 4 years we were told, but that's just fine with me.

I feel so fortunate to have received this precious companion. Thank you again for allowing me to adopt her. I will remember you at Jojo the Grey in the future when I am deciding on destinations for charitable donations.
